Lappy Ever After became an official 501(c)3 rescue corporation in the wake of a very large and terrible hoarder surrender in early 2014 that left long-time breed supporters, rescuers and Lappy lovers unable to physically assist in the assimilation of a large hoarding situation in conjunction with the intake shelter - all for lack of 501(c)3 status. This devastated many people in the Lappy community, most of whom had been rescuing and re-homing Lappies and other breeds for literally decades, and some of them decided it was time to rectify that situation.
The goal of LEA is to provide a safety and support system for regional and local level rescuers, and to ensure that no Lappy ever spends a night alone in a shelter, on a street, or in need of medical treatment. If you know of a Finnish Lapphund in need, please contact us and tell us about them.
Interested In Adoption?
Occasionally we will find a dog who, while it is not documentable, is Lappy-like in appearance and/or behavior enough for us to want to help make sure they get a good forever home (Every dog has value!). While we do not guarantee these dogs to be Lappies, they're cute, highly adoptable, and need you! If you are interested in adopting, please let us know!
Found A Possible Lappy?
So you think you found a Lappy, or know where there is one in need. Now what? Thank you for helping a dog in need, Lappy or otherwise. Stray dogs, dogs in bad situations and dogs in shelters need our help and support, and no matter what the dog turns out to be, you have done a good thing by taking that first step.
Now. About that dog. The very first thing anyone should do when they find any dog is to take it to the vet and have it scanned for a microchip. No microchip? Not surprising. Finnish Lapphunds in the United States are still very limited in number. That translates to extremely few rescue dogs. Our breeders are very careful with their puppies and each dog is microchipped. The likelihood that the dog that is being advertised by a shelter or found on the street actually *is* a Lappy (or even a Lappy mix) is very, very small. Not impossible, but small. That being said, we prefer to check out every questionable dog just in case so feel free to send us an e-mail!
With the rise in breed recognition that Lappies have experienced in the last few years, there are a lot of shelters and rescues who are going to mistakenly (and sometimes knowing) label a dog as a Finnish Lapphund. Overcrowded shelters and rescues are just trying to get a good dog into a good home. Photos of the breed are all over the internet and it's easy to mistake a fluffy, black and tan dog for a Lappy, but fluffy, black and tan does not necessarily make it a Lappy.
We encourage everyone to adopt from a reputable shelter or organization, but do so with the understanding that the dog you adopt is honestly unverifiable as a breed, regardless of any labels assigned to it, and to adopt one that will fit your family and lifestyle. Shelter workers and rescuers have no special or secret powers of identifying a breed, and listed breeds are *often* wrong on even common dog breeds. The only way to know you have a Lappy is to get one from a reputable breeder.
If you must know for certain the breed, buy one from a reputable breeder, otherwise, please enjoy your all American spoiled-rotten furkid!
Please contact the Finnish Lapphund Club of America if you wish to find a breeder near you.
